Joseph Sekiku is a visionary social entrepreneur and community development leader from Karagwe, Tanzania. In 1993, he founded the Family Alliance for Development and Cooperation (FADECO) with a mission to empower rural communities through sustainable agriculture, appropriate technology, and community media. Over three decades, his work has transformed FADECO into a hub of innovation and resilience in the Kagera Region.
With a background in agricultural engineering (Uganda), renewable energy technologies (Wales), and further training in post-harvest technologies (South Africa), management, and development studies, Joseph has combined technical expertise with a deep commitment to community empowerment. He pioneered the use of solar fruit and vegetable drying technologies in Tanzania, enabling smallholder farmers especially women to reduce post-harvest losses, add value to their produce, and access local and international markets.
Recognizing the power of information, Joseph also established FADECO Community Radio (FRC 100.8 FM), giving voice to rural communities and ensuring access to vital knowledge on agriculture, health, education, environment, and governance. His innovative use of ICT and radio has bridged the rural information gap, connecting thousands of households to knowledge that improves lives.
Joseph’s leadership has been recognized globally. He became an Ashoka Fellow in 2007, and in 2011, FADECO won the UN SEED Award for pioneering women’s access to profitable markets through solar drying initiatives. He has served as Chairman of the Community Media Network of Tanzania (COMNETA) and is an active member of professional and civic organizations, including the Tanzania Telecentre Network, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Rotary Club of Karagwe.
Today, Joseph Sekiku continues to inspire a new generation of youth leaders to build on FADECO’s legacy, driving forward his lifelong vision of sustainable rural development, climate resilience, and community empowerment.
