Giving Voice to People with Dissability

Project Info

Project Description

Problem

People with disabilities have for a long time faced discrimination, social isolation and stigmatization. Given their conditions, they have in some instances turned to self- isolation which lead to stress and denial. Politically, people with disabilities are not politically represented. So they lack representation and therefore too lack participation. FADECO RADIO believes that given a voice, people with disabilities, who in principle are only abled differently, can reach the human potentials in a dignified way.

Solution

FADECO RADIO through the kind support of STEM VAN AFIKA, a Dutch organisation implemented a needs assessment and later sensitization program of people with disabilities. Many people with disabilities of various kinds were identified. Most of them expresses challenges ranging from economical challenges, health, stigmatization, seclusion, lack of access to capital, etc.

Outcome

One key achievement was the agenda of people with disabilities to be put on district priorities. For Karagwe district, office space was allocated for people with disabilities; working with the community development office, all people with disabilities were helped to form into groups and are now receiving support in form of capital or grants to undertake income-generating activities. People with disabilities among other groups have now access to a 4% share of the local government budget.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church through if Karagwe Diocese have now initiated a project called KIVULINI. Which mainly is raising the voices of people with disabilities. They now run regular radio programs.
